6 on Health: How much salt is too much?
A new study shows Americans are consuming less salt. Unfortunately, however, it's not necessarily because they're making healthier choices.
Much of the decrease can be attributed to food manufacturers, who are adding less salt to products.
Researchers examined data on packaged food and beverages.
The found that -- between 2000 and 2014 -- the amount of sodium in the products dropped 12 percent to less than 2,000 milligrams a day.
But that's still too much.
Health experts say most Americans ingest far too much salt -- about 3,400 milligrams daily.
