6 on Health: New stroke prevention procedure
A heart surgeon in Baton Rouge first learned about a new stroke prevention procedure called TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) in New York, and now he is the first doctor in South Louisiana to perform the surgical procedure.
Dr. Weaver has successfully helped at least three patients in the month of August 2017.
Rather than open up arteries to clear a path for blood flow, doctors make a smaller incision and insert a catheter to reverse the flow of blood.
Dr. Weaver says the process helps lower the chances for something to go wrong.
The surgery leaves a very small scar, less than an inch in length as opposed to older procedures that would leave a scar of more than three inches.
