Rep. Williams speaks after staffer injured at Congressional baseball practice (CNN Newsource)

WASHINGTON - "It seemed like it went forever."

Rep. Roger Williams (R- Texas) gave his harrowing account of a gun battle that left him injured and other teammates shot - including Rep. Steve Scalise (R- Louisiana).

Williams said he was hitting ground balls to players on the Republican baseball team Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Va. when he heard shots fired.

"Little did i know the perpetrator was 20 yards from me."

He didn't think what he heard was gunshots, until he heard others on the field yelling, "he's got a gun, run for cover!"

The representative dove into the dugout to shield himself from the barrage of bullets flying around the park.

He suffered an ankle injury in the attack.

Williams said his legislative correspondent, Zachary Barth, was texting asking for help after he was injured.

The congressman said he held onto Scalise as Sen. Jeff Flake (R- Arizona) made a tourniquet out of a belt.

Scalise was out of surgery by Wednesday afternoon, listed in critical condition.

The four others injured by gunfire are expected to recover.
