BISD students taking message to Austin
BEAUMONT - by Leslie Rangel
A hearing that will decide if a new board of managers and superintendent will come in won't happen until Tuesday, but BISD students are preparing for it now.
This is not you're typical Father's Day celebration
"At the beginning of the day, I forgot it was Father's Day I've been so caught up with what's going on," Hope Flores, an Ozen High School student says.
They're brewing a student movement, trying to block the Beaumont school board from cutting fine arts teachers resulting in eliminating fine arts programs.
"It says Austin bound because Austin is where we're headed, that's our destination," Flores said.
These students have a message to deliver.
"We're not just kids trying to fool around and get it on TV or anything, we're trying to put a message out there and tell people how we really feel and how it's affecting us," Alex Trevino, a Vincent Middle School student said.
Here's what happening, the Beaumont school board has a $25 million deficit, a result of an over spending $15 million dollars from the 2013/2014 budget.
The district is looking to cut teachers to help save money.
"Just taking our money and cutting so many things and taking it away from us, I think that's one part they really messed up on," Trevino said.
"We want people to know we're not just going to stay in Beaumont, we're traveling to Austin and we want to see this thing through," Flores says.
But since these students are doing it alone, they say they need your help.
"We really need the money, the only thing that could take make taking more kids to Austin possible is money donations for gas," Flores says.
"Whatever they gave us, it could be $10 or it could be $100, it doesn't really matter, anything counts," Trevino said.
They'll take anything to help them continue on their journey.
"We really hope people take it seriously even though we're younger," Flores says.
"Wow, no it's it's pretty awesome to see how they have come form being little kids to young adults and actually standing up for what they believe in," Isreal Flores, a BISD father said.
These dads are witnesses to their children's movement, a gift they say can never be out done.
"We're proud we stand by you, we stand by all of our district's kids, the students the teacher and we won't stop no matter what," Mundo Trevino, a BISD father says.
"Keep up the good fight," Isreal Flores said.
