5-year-old boy dies following Sabine County accident
Family members have confirmed that 5-year-old Charlie Nichols has died in a Houston hospital following a tragic late Monday afternoon (Dec. 4) accident in Sabine County, which also claimed the lives of his mother and another man.
It happened on Highway 96, just south of Pineland, as rain was falling across the region. State troopers said the SUV which the family was traveling in hydroplaned out of control, and was then struck by an oncoming pickup truck.
Scott Anthony "Bull" Morris, 51, was driving the SUV, and his passenger, Kandy Windham Nichols, 45, both of whom had just moved from Mitte, Louisiana to Pineland a few days prior, died at the scene.
Charlie, who was affectionately known by family as "Bo Weevil," was flown to a Houston hospital where he remained on life support until his death on Wednesday.
Family members said Charlie had been enrolled at West Sabine Elementary School just five days before the accident.
Family members say the total cost for the three funerals will be approximately $14,000, and there's no word yet on Charlie's medical expenses.
The Pineland Pool Hall at 679 U.S. Hwy 96 N in Pineland hosted a benefit for the family on Friday.
