A 23-year-old Beaumont man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound Tuesday morning after a crash on Highway 90 in Jefferson County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The man was a passenger in a Ford F-250 pickup traveling west on Highway 90 around 4 a.m., when DPS officials say the driver traveled off the roadway and hit several trees "for an unknown reason."

The driver, identified by DPS officials as 21-year-old Jacob Ferrill, of China, was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries. A DPS statement says Ferrill was not wearing a seat belt and had to be extracted from the pickup by firefighters.

His passenger, later identified by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office as 23-year-old Chase Taylor, of Beaumont, appeared have a gunshot wound to the right side of his head.

A handgun was found in Taylor's lap inside the vehicle.

The sheriff's office detectives are in the early stages of the investigation. A statement released Tuesday afternoon said the exact cause of the crash is unclear at this time.

The crash happened just west of Meeker Road.
