Beaumont Police Department helps to train Brazilian officers

Two Brazil police officers spent the day training with the Beaumont Police Department. The Brazilian officers took part in tactical and weapons training.

Officers Renato Taroco and Leonardo Mesquita were recipients of the True Heroes award in Brazil.

Their peers voted and Taroco and Mesquita were selected to receive the honor.

Two categories of the award recognized bravery and innovation.

"I think it's a chance of a lifetime for them to come to the United States see how we operate see what we do and bring that back to their agencies and continue to work on their craft," said LT. Kelly Cole with the Beaumont Police Department.

Officer Taroco received the award for bravery. Taroco raised a burning vehicle with his own bare hands to save two of his brothers in uniform. Taroco suffered injuries.

Officer Mesquita received the award for innovation. His outstanding contribution to his community earned him the honor.

Mesquita is the founder of the Youth Guardian Project -- a program that serves 400 young people ages 13 to 21.

The officers will continue their training through Friday.
