Deputies find 42 pounds of marijuana in traffic stop on I-10

A 38-year-old Rio Grande woman was arrested Wednesday in Jefferson County after deputies say they found 42 pounds of marijuana concealed in her vehicle.

Deputies stopped Benina Villarreal on Interstate 10 near Smith Road around 4 p.m., according to a news release sent by the Jefferson County Sheriff's office.

The news release states that deputies became suspicious while speaking to Villarreal, who had her 18-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son in the vehicle as passengers.

Deputies were given consent to search the vehicle, according to the news release, and found 17 bundles of marijuana concealed in panels within the vehicle. They estimated the street value at $84,000.

Villarreal was booked into the Jefferson County jail for marijuana possession and her bond was set at $25,000.

The car and the child were released to the 18-year-old daughter.
