Diggles family federal sentencing set for Tuesday
A federal judge is scheduled to sentence former Deep East Texas Council of Governments executive director Walter Diggles as well as his wife, Rosie, and daughter, Anita, on Tuesday. The three are set to appear before U.S. District Judge Ron Clark at 9:00 a.m. in the Ward R. Burke Federal Courthouse in Lufkin.
The three were convicted in August of 2017 on thirty felony charges of stealing millions of dollars in federal grant money intended to go to victims of Hurricanes Rita and Ike.
Walter Diggles was the former Executive Director of the Deep East Texas Council of Governments, and he continues as pastor of the Lighthouse Church of God in Christ on Helen Street, where his wife and daughter also have leadership roles.
Prosecutors presented evidence to the jury last year which proved that the family funneled money from the Deep East Texas Council of Government into an organization at Walter Diggles' church known as the Deep East Texas Foundation, and then into their own pockets.
