The 70-year-old woman accused of fatally shooting her boyfriend Wednesday on Eastex Freeway near the Home Depot in Beaumont is charged with murder.

She was identified Thursday by jail officials as Elizabeth Ann Taylor.

Those close to Taylor say her boyfriend, 58-year-old Larry Atwood, physically abused her during their two-year relationship.

"He was beating the crap out of her," says Carol Lompe.

Lompe is Taylor's sister, and she says that Taylor was acting out of self-defense in the truck when she shot Atwood.

Lompe claims Taylor was being beaten in the vehicle and reached for the gun she had in her purse to try and stop Atwood.

October is national domestic violence month, and Sgt. Cody Guedry of the Beaumont Police Department says victims should reach out before a situation escalates.

"People just got to understand that you can't do that. Let us know, come to the police and let us handle it before it gets out of hand," says Guedry.

He said that when investigators were questioning Taylor, they noticed bruises on her arms.

Taylor's bond is expected to be set Friday.
