Firefighter in Louisiana struck, killed on icy road
WEST FELICIANA, LOUISIANA —
It is with great sadness that West Feliciana Fire Protection District No. 1 announces the death of Deputy Fire Chief Russell Achord, as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty. Chief Achord was on the scene of an eighteen wheeler which had run off the road due to icy conditions and was blocking a travel lane. Chief Achord was working with other responders when a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 61 lost control and crashed into the eighteen wheeler and another responders vehicle. The responders vehicle struck Chief Achord and other responders. Chief Achord was trapped and had to be extracted while life saving measures were attempted. He was transported to West Feliciana Parish Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Chief Achord began as a volunteer with the Fire Protection District more than 24 years ago. He has an accomplished career as a paramedic, a law enforcement officer and firefighter. Chief Achord has numerous awards including an award for Valor in the line of duty. The last three and a half years, he has served in the full time position as the Deputy Fire Chief. He is survived by his wife, two children, and his extended family in the Fire Protection District No. 1 of West Feliciana.
