Grieving community holds vigil after mother & five children killed in fire outside Silsbee
A vigil for a mother and her five children who died in an apartment fire just north of Silsbee drew a heart-broken community together.
Friends and loved ones released pink and blue balloons from the Old Silsbee High School football field.
The fire started around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 8700 block of Fountain Drive in Hardin County.
Ashley Pickering, 31, and her daughter and four sons were killed. Pickering and her children lived in an efficiency apartment behind a house owned by Ashley's father, Ricky Pickering, and her stepmom, Terry.
The children were between 3 and 11 years old, including twin boys one week shy of their fifth birthdays, which would have been next week..
The children are Cristian Mattox, 11; Serenity Mattox, 7; twins Cavence and Cash Mattox, 4; and the youngest, Camden, 3.
