The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a prisoner who was given CPR at the jail and died at a hospital.

The Sheriff's Office says Beaumont Police brought 38-year-old Jacobie Flowers to the jail at about 3:25 a.m.

He was charged with public intoxication. Flowers had been medically cleared at a local hospital prior to his arrival at the jail, according to the Sheriff's Office. He was placed under a mental health hold.

While checking on Flowers, a correctional officer discovered he was lying on the floor and appeared to be in distress. Medical staff at the jail were immediately notified and quickly began CPR, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Flowers was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died at about 3:40 p.m. A judge has ordered an autopsy.
