Ending a tradition of 71 years, the Jasper Lions Club announced on Monday that it would no longer hold the Jasper Lions Club Benefit Rodeo.

A statement from the organization said that following a recent review of the last rodeo, the club had decided to go in a different direction and also hinted that it might host or organize other events or activities within the community.

The letter or statement thanked the community for it’s years of support and contributions to the effort and also the many benevolent projects that it served.

For several years, it had been known by many that the rodeo was suffering from a lack of finances and volunteers that might bring an end to the Annual Event and earlier this year it was learned that the group had sold it’s rodeo arena on the northeast side of Jasper to local businessman Marvin McDonald and on Monday there was still another sign on the facility listing it as for sale.

In early June, the organizer of the Jasper County Multicultural Rodeo, Aaron Allen, also announced that the event which was scheduled for mid June at the Lions Rodeo Arena had been cancelled and that it would be rescheduled for later this year due to a lack of funding and support.
