There has been a break in the case of the human remains found last week just north of the small community of Erin in Jasper County.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said Monday that a bag has been found not far from the remains found on County Road 350, which contain personal items belonging to Jon Smith, a 37-year-old man who lived in the area who was reported missing in mid 2015.

Newman said the bag itself had Smith’s name on it and that it also contained a Bible with Smith’s name on the front as well as clothing. He also said the bag was found about 300 to 400 feet away from where the human remains.

Newman said Thursday that even though he believed the remains were from Smith, that he could not positively say so because at that he and others had not even determined whether the remains were from a woman or man and that h forensic tests would be performed.

Newman and others are still waiting of the results of such tests which are reportedly being performed by State Police at a crime lab in North Texas.
