Port Arthur man indicted for murder
The 20-year-old Port Arthur man accused of shooting and killing Javonte Jack last month was indicted Wednesday for murder.
A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Diante Malik Burrell in the Nov. 7 killing.
Jack was shot several times in the chest at 4120 FM 365.
He was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont, where he died as a result of the gunshot wounds.
A witness told police that after hearing gunshots two men, both carrying guns, entered a white Camaro and drove away from the scene.
Around 9 a.m. the next morning, Port Arthur's detectives received information that the suspects were in the 4100 block of 4th Street, where Burrell was located chased toward the seawall.
He was taken to the police station, where he admitted to shooting a 7.62 round into Jack's chest.
Burrell has said he acted in self-defense.
