Port Arthur Town Hall meeting addresses broken levee and residents' concerns

Some Jefferson County residents had questions regarding a damaged levee in Port Arthur.

Port Arthur city leaders and others met with dozens of concerned residents who live in Drainage District 7.

The district is under a state of emergency due to a broken portion of a levee near Taylor Bayou off Highway 87.

Officials answered questions from Port Arthur residents during a Town Hall meeting on Thursday.

Residents had a number of questions, including what caused the levee to break, how long will it take to repair the broken levee and how much will it cost as well as what would happen if a hurricane comes through.

Residents heard from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the manager of Drainage District 7.

Construction workers were on site earlier today to begin repairs on the levee -- a 250-foot section of a levee system that's protected south Jefferson County for more than 40 years.

KFDM/6 News on Fox's Peter Eliopoulos has the report.
