Some Jefferson Co. residents asking for property taxes to be lowered following flooding
Some Jefferson County residents are asking for their property taxes to be lowered following flood damage from Tropical Storm Harvey.
Several residents spoke up at a Jefferson County Appraisal District meeting Wednesday night.
They want damaged homes reappraised before the end of the year to account for flood damage.
They say it would reduce property taxes for people already struggling after the devastating storm.
"It's not right that these people are having to pay taxes on something they can't inhabit," said Elaine Henderson, who's advocating for reappraisal in 2017. "They need to pay what the current value is to this date through the end of the year and then reevaluate in 2018."
If taxing entities the appraisal board represents request a reappraisal, property taxes could be lowered but so far that hasn't happened.
