Sour Lake man indicted for intoxication manslaughter; documents indicate he was on Xanax

Joseph Brady Carney, 31, of Sour Lake, is charged with second degree felony intoxication manslaughter, which carries a punishment range of two to 20 years in prison.

A 31-year-old Sour Lake man was indicted Wednesday by a Jefferson County grand jury for intoxication manslaughter in the crash which killed Mauricio Cordoba-Gomez, 69, of Port Arthur.

Joseph Brady Carney, 31, of Sour Lake, is charged with second degree felony intoxication manslaughter, which carries a punishment range of two to 20 years in prison.

A probable cause affidavit alleges Carney was under the influence of Alprazolam, a drug commonly known as Xanax.

Gomez died when his vehicle was struck from behind and then exploded and burned Sept. 27, 2016 on Highway 69 near 39th Street.

One witness told investigators that Carney never hit the brakes as he rammed into Gomez's 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee sitting at a red light, according to the affidavit.
