Thousands of Jefferson County flood victims not getting tax break, but it's not too late
JEFFERSON COUNTY —
Home appraisal values are in the mail, bound for homes across Jefferson County. However, many who flooded may not see tax relief.
Of the 21,000 homes that received significant damage from Tropical Storm Harvey, only 4,000 reported to the Jefferson Central Appraisal District.
This means the remaining 17,000, will pay property taxes on the full value of their home similar to last year.
But there's still time to lower the rates.
"There will be a protest form that will go out with their notice," says Jefferson Central Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Angela Bellard. "They need to mail that in, and any documents they have pertaining to their house as of January 1st."
The deadline to file a protest form is May 15th. For more information you can go to the Jefferson Central Appraisal District website.
