Police say a 23-year-old mother of four is being held for questioning in connection with the death of her newborn baby boy.

Jackson Police say the infants body was found wrapped in a blanket inside the trunk of a car driven by 23-year-old Jalesa Gaines of McIntosh Tuesday afternoon.

Gaines is only being charged with giving false ID to a police officer. The District Attorney says she'll be held in custody until they find out what truly happened to her infant son.

Investigators have already searched the mother's home in McIntosh and are now looking into her medical records.

The District Attorney says that charges may be upgraded, charging Jalesa Gaines with abuse of a corpse. Investigators need to know the cause of death to move any further in the case.

"Right now we are waiting on the autopsy report from the Department of Forensic Sciences, and that will determine what type of charges if any that will filed against the mother," said Jackson Police Chief Jerry Taylor.

Gaines was stopped for an expired tag at the intersections of Hwy 43 and Hwy 69.

"There were a couple of people identified that were possible witnesses we are trying to locate and interview as well," said Taylor.

Police say they believe the newborn died elsewhere. Police say the mother is providing little information.

"We have a baby that never had to a chance to speak for itself, so we are having to speak for him and we take that very seriously and we want to cover all our bases in this case," said Taylor.

Police say they expect a preliminary autopsy report by tomorrow, and that a full report may take weeks.
