BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel
Beaumont Police are investigating the death of 23 year-old Mitchell Glenn Downs of Lumberton. Police discovered his body in the median of the Eastex Freeway service road after drivers called police shortly before 7 this morning.
Police say it appears a truck struck the man as he walked Northbound along the shoulder of the freeway. People who work across the highway say they've seen it before.
"I've seen lots of accidents out there, just 2 weeks ago we saw someone run through the ditch and we had not a clue it was like that when we got to work this morning." Tabitha Pritchett, an onlooker told KFDM News.
Tuesday morning Pritchett found a similar scene with her driveway blocked off in yellow crime scene tape.
Police spent the morning recreating the scene and urge drivers to remian alert to avoid more accidents like this hit and run.
"People who are driving sometimes get lost in their own little world and they don't pay as close attention as they should and that's how these types of tragic accidents occur." Sgt. Rob Flores with Beaumont Police told KFDM News.
Pritchett says it's heartbreaking the man was only 23 years old with a whole life ahead of him.
