Community cheerleaders support the FX Superstars
PORT ARTHUR - By Megan Dillard - There are many programs around Southeast Texas for children with special needs. KFDM met a group of "superstars" who won't let anything keep them from cheerleading.
The spirited kids laughed, cheered, and got a special surprise tonight. We spoke with one cheer mom who explained how the kids are not only having fun but also getting therapy through the sport. These kids are stretching, getting ready for cheer practice at the Full FX gym in Port Arthur.
The FX Superstars is a group of 12 kids. Each has a type of disability, but nothing keeps them from cheering and having fun.
"I love cheering! I am so psyched about being a cheerleader, Miss Megan."
"I'm so excited! I just feel like I can't hold it in much longer!"
"It's really cool that I have lots of friends here that care about me. I like the people who work here because they're really nice to me."
Tonight, the Superstars cheered for a new audience. Cheerleaders from school districts across southeast Texas joined the Superstars for practice.
"It was a big surprise for them tonight. They didn't know this was going to happen. They get excited whenever they see a bunch of cheerleaders supporting them in the sport that they love."
Sophomore Kaylee Kyler says coaching and cheering with these kids reminds her why she first joined the sport. "They get so excited. They don't want to come off that floor. They just stand there like oh, yes!"
Cheer mom Rebecca Majors says participation in this is much more than a hobby for the children. It's a form of therapy. "They have to count, and they have to do their chant, and they learn their cheer. Motor skills, especially like the autistic kids, the sensory, the jumping."
Speaking of jumping, the kids seem to have a favorite part of practice.
"Jumps, I like the jumps, jumps."
From shining smiles to high fives. People from around the community, all there to support the "Superstars." The activity is free for the kids through sponsorship in the community. For more information on the Superstars, call the Full FX gym at 409-722-2222.
