Hundreds expected at gun show
PORT ARTHUR - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Port Arthur will welcome gun enthusiasts to “The Real Gun Show” this weekend looking to buy guns, two months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 children dead and reignited the gun debate on a national scale.
Hundreds of gun enthusiasts are expected to fill the Bob Bowers Civic Center over the two days.
“Long as you’re a legal resident of Texas and you pass the background check, you have the right to buy any weapon you can afford,” said the show’s promoter Art Behrends.
But that could all change, if Congress supports the president’s plan to ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Behrends says gun owners need to take responsibility for their actions and monitor their gun activity.
“It’s not the gun that hurts anybody,” Behrends said. “It’s kind of like a twinkie. You can set it over here on the thing for 52 years, and it won’t hurt anybody until somebody picks it up and fires it… incorrectly.”
Behrends says nearly every vendor will conduct background checks at the gun show. Most are required by law.
Private sellers that don’t have federal firearms licenses, however, are not required. Behrends believes they should still obtain personal information from the buyers.
“If you sell one and you’re walking around and sell one, I would make sure I got a copy of the driver’s license to know if something happened who I sold it to,” he said.
He also said he will provide a copy machine for anyone who would like to scan the licenses.
“The Real Gun Show” kicks off on Saturday at 9 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. On Sunday, it’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults will be charged $7 per day or $12 for a weekend pass. Children, 11 and under, are free.
