Police: Beaumont officer dragged by vehicle
BEAUMONT - Beaumont police say one of their own is recovering tonight... after he was dragged by a vehicle.
Police arrived at the Magic City Lounge located in the 1300 block of Gulf Street at about 2:25 am, Sunday in reference to a large group of people blocking the street.
Investigators say a Beaumont police officer saw a vehicle stopped in the street. The Officer said he saw a driver place something in the center console.
Police say the officer asked the driver to pull over to to side.
Police said the driver turned the car towards the officer and oncoming traffic and the officer's hand was stuck in the door handle while he kept ordering the driver to stop.
Police said the driver sped up and the officer fell and was dragged a short distance.
The officer was able to give a description of the vehicle and other officers quickly located it.
The vehicle got to I-10 and headed towards Orange County as officers chased it. The vehicle exited the "Rose City exit" and came to a stop.
BPD placed two men under arrest. The driver had outstanding warrants he was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, evading arrest in a motor vehicle.
The passenger was arrested for public intoxication.
Police say they found a CO2 air soft Pistol in the car and say it is looks almost identical to a real firearm.
Beaumont EMS was called and transported the injured officer to Christus St Elizabeth Hospital.
Police say the officer's injuries included broken ribs, torn rotator cuff and abrasions from the pavement.
