PORT ARTHUR - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Adult Protective Services hosted a symposium on financial exploitation at the O.W. Collins Elderly Apartments in Port Arthur.
Representatives from the agency and other safety departments spoke to people living in the complex about the ways thieves take advantage of people 65 years of age and older.
“This is an elderly apartment complex,” Stephanie Williams with the APS said. “A lot of them are in wheelchairs on walkers and are unable to come out in the community to get the resources we have here to provide for them.” Many people younger than that age group also attended the symposium.
Juanita Butler, 57, was raised around older people and has a special place for them in her heart. Going to an event like this one, helps her help others.
“I’ve seen where people have trusted one another, given them their money to go to the store for them,” she said. “I've seen them break down. They didn't have their roast or something else they wanted, and I've given out of my pocket.”
Now instead of having to give up her money to help, she and the rest of the attendees are able to bring change and stop financial exploitation.
If you or someone you know might be a victim of financial exploitation call the APS Hotline at 1-800-252-5400 or click here for more information.
