Retired teacher training as volunteer firefighter collapses and dies
LEAGUE CITY, Texas (AP) -- A retired teacher who last month began training to be a Southeast Texas volunteer firefighter has died after collapsing following physical drills.
A spokeswoman for League City on Thursday identified the cadet as 62-year-old Donald Mize.
Kristy Wyatt says Mize was taking part in routine physical training Wednesday night at a drill field when he collapsed during a cool-down session. She says Mize was transported to a hospital where he died.
Wyatt had no information on whether the former teacher in the Clear Creek Independent School District had a history of medical problems.
She says everyone must pass a physical examination before training as a volunteer firefighter. Wyatt says Mize was also a member of a citizen police academy alumni group.
