JEFFERSON COUNTY - From Jefferson County Sheriff's Office - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office wants everyone to enjoy a safe and fun Halloween this year. We offer the following tips to assist in avoiding a tragedy as the "Trick or Treat" participants move about the neighborhoods: Traditional trick-or-treating tips: * Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going. * Only trick-or-treat at homes you know and that have a porch light on. * Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. * Never enter a stranger's home or car for any reason. * Always walk. Never run across a street. * Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered. * Consider using flashlights or LED-simulated candles. Do not use real candles. Other tips include checking loot at home for tampering and avoiding giving small children candy they could choke on. Tips for drivers navigating streets on Halloween: * Keep an eye out for children and make sure to slow down in residential areas * Costumes can be dark and not have reflective materials and little kids like to run-be prepared to stop.
