Dustin DuCharme was crowned homecoming king.
It was a special night for one LCM student and not just because it was the school's Homecoming. KFDM Reporter Kalie Desimone explains why everyone was rooting for one of the nominees tonight. It's Homecoming Eeekend at Little Cypress Mauriceville High School. "It's going to be exciting for those who win homecoming king and queen" says Becky Davis.
Davis is a senior at LCM High School. She's one of the nominees for Homecoming Court. "I'm just very grateful and excited. It's a great honor" says Davis. Casey Viator is a varsity football player. He's in the running for Homecoming King. "I was surprised. Kind of happy" says Viator.
Both students were happy to be nominated by their peers but they believe one student will take home the king's crown. Traditionally football players have the upper hand in winning titles like homecoming king. but this year, the football team is rallying around someone they call their biggest fan. "Everyone knows who Dustin is" says Davis. "If you say Dustin DuCharme, everybody knows him" says Casey Viator.
So who is this popular student? Someone other students look up to. Meet senior Dustin DuCharme. I want to win homecoming king" says DuCharme. He was diagnosed with Down Syndrome as an infant. But that hasn't stopped him from making a lot of friends at LCM High School. "Dustin is so sweet. He loves to be around everybody and he wants to be a part of everything" says Davis.
"He'll always lift you up and be there for you and cheer you on even when your down" says Viator. That kind of dedication to his friends, makes it clear in many students minds why DuCharme deserves to be named Homecoming King.
"It's not out of him being special. It's out of him deserving it. It's not about the best athlete or best looking person. It's about the best characteristics and he's got it" says Viator. DuCharme's parents are thrilled the students at LCM have not only supported their son but fully accepted him. "I'm very honored. I can't believe these kids are doing this for him" says Sherry Ducharme.
Viator, his teammates and others are pulling for their friend. That's why Viator has stopped campaigning for himself and has focused his time on making sure DuCharme wins Friday night. They say they're not giving him anything. They say he's earned it. "I think it's a good idea" says Davis. "It's not for me to win. He deserves it" says Viator. They say Dustin is the most popular kid in school and they want to make sure he always remembers his senior Homecoming.
