JASPER - by Steve Stewart/KJAS - The Jasper City Council will meet in an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning at 10:00 to discuss the electric rebate from the Sam Rayburn Municipal Power Agency. In their July 9th meeting, council voted to give the rebate back to the citizens during the summer months of July, August, and September.
However, when the electric bills came out this week, the citizens immediately noticed that they were not getting their approximately 50% savings that was promised to them.
On Monday, City Finance Director Denise Kelly told KJAS News that the city bills on a three month delay. Kelly said that the citizens will pay for July electric usage in October.
However, a glance at a City of Jasper electric bill shows that the citizens actually pay for the previous month's usage. For example, the current electric bill for KJAS is due to be paid by August 12th, and the usage is based on a time period of June 20th through July 21st.
Jasper Mayor Mike Lout says the purpose of Wednesday's meeting is to get to the bottom of what happened, and figure out why the savings were not passed along to the citizens in their July electric bill.
