HOUSTON - by Sherry Williams/KHOU-TV and www.khou.com - Barbara Holdsworth was in the worst possible spot at the worst possible time when she was shot by a gunman in College Station.
The Houston mother was in her SUV about 100 yards away from the shooter when she was hit by three bullets, twice in the back and once in the chest. She remains in critical condition in ICU at St. Joseph Hospital where she’s surrounded by family and friends.
Former co-workers and friends back in Houston are praying that Holdsworth will be OK.
"She has a beautiful spirit and we know that she’s a fighter," said Kitty Vann.
They describe the 51-year-old as an avid runner who is physically fit.
"If anybody’s gonna fight, it’s gonna be Barbara," said Patti Miller. "Better believe it."
Holdsworth is a divorced single mom whose son, Thomas, is reportedly on the football team at Memorial High. Her daughter, Sarah, is in a sorority at Texas A&M. Holdsworth was in College Station Monday to help Sarah move from one house to another before school starts.
Friends say she is a very dedicated mom who often brought her kids to work when they were younger.
"She was working and she’d bring ‘em up a lot of the time with her and she always just said, ‘You know, I’ve got to keep working. I’ve got to buy these babies’ shoes,’" remembered Nancy Younger Kruka.
Friends describe Holdsworth as the type of person who will probably forgive shooter Thomas Caffall. The 35-year-old gunman was shot and killed by police after he killed two people and wounded Holdsworth and three others.
"She probably would not be angry if she were in any kind of shape to be angry," said Del Dodd.
"Barbara is very spiritual and she is so nice. I mean, I’m not kidding you. She would probably say that she would forgive him," said Miller.
The Holdsworth family issued the following statement Tuesday:
"We are hopeful God is going to continue to heal Barbara. Our thoughts and prayers are with the other victims."
