JEFFERSON COUNTY - by Scott Lawrence - Rice farmers are in a Beaumont court attempting to stop the construction of the keystone pipeline in Southeast Texas.
TransCanada is planning to build the pipeline from the Canadian border with the United States to the Gulf Coast.
The government rejected the company's first plan to build the 1,200 mile pipeline, and while TransCanada is redesigning the project, it's going ahead with the southern portion of the pipeline.
That portion doesn't require presidential approval because it won't cross an international boundary.
A group called the Texas Rice Land Partners' are in court Wednesday in Beaumont to argue that TransCanada can't condemn land for the project.
The group cites a recent Texas Supreme Court ruling that says a company must prove its pipeline is for the common good before it can take private property.
Judge Tom Rugg says he'll announce a decision September 24.
Several similar cases are making their way through Texas courts.
People who support the group demonstrated Wednesday outside the Jefferson County Courthouse.
