LOS ANGELES (AP) - Texas and California lead the nation in the number of children who drowned this summer in pools and spas.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a news release on Thursday that 137 children under 15 years old drowned nationwide in a pool or spa from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
At least 100 of the 137 children were younger than 5 years old and 54 of the drownings occurred soon after the children left an adult who was in their immediate vicinity.
Texas leads the nation with 17 deaths, followed by California with 10, Ohio with nine and Arizona and Michigan with eight apiece. The figures are based news media reports.
Commission chairman Inez Tenenbaum says the figures show child drownings are a serious public health problem.
