BEAUMONT - From BISD - Rachel Morse, the former principal at Fletcher Elementary School, died at her home on Saturday. Morse broke barriers as she became the first Hispanic female principal in the Beaumont Independent School District. Mrs. Morse was so well thought of that she was called out of retirement to serve again, this time as the interim principal at Fletcher prior to Anita Frank being appointed to the post.
Mrs. Morse started her career in education as a coach at Assumption School. Counselor, assistant principal and principal were among her titles in BISD. Prior to joining Fletcher as its principal, Morse worked at Vincent Middle School. When she joined Fletcher, she led the school to the exemplary status and laid the groundwork for it becoming a National Blue Ribbon School.
Mrs. Morse's husband Allan recently passed. The mother of five and grandmother of many was known as "A very family-oriented person. Morse was devoted to God, her family, friends and the Beaumont community. She was one of the strongest, most spiritual women I have ever met," said Nancy Loyd, a friend and colleague. Loyd is assistant principal at Odom Academy.
BISD Superintendent Timothy B. Chargois said, "Although Mrs. Morse had retired, she was still involved with BISD. She cared about the future of our district, especially the children. She left her imprint on BISD and consequently on the world through the thousands of young minds she touched. She was one of the best educators I know and we will miss her dearly."
