EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A West Texas driver has been sentenced to 16 years in prison in an alcohol-related accident that left two passengers dead.
A judge in El Paso sentenced 23-year-old Miguel Vargas of El Paso.
Records show Vargas was legally drunk last December during the fiery one-vehicle accident that killed 23-year-old Kim Araujo and 19-year-old Idaly Reyes. Two other people in the vehicle were injured.
Jurors last week convicted Vargas of two counts of intoxicated manslaughter and two counts of intoxicated assault.
The jury recommended eight-year sentences on the manslaughter counts.
A judge Tuesday decided the two prison terms must be served consecutively.
Vargas was sentenced to 10 years of probation on the assault counts.
