BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
U.S. Senate candidate Ted Cruz rallied in Beaumont on Monday for Republican congressional candidate Randy Weber, who is running for the District 14 seat against Democrat Nick Lampson.
“I'm proud to be here, supporting Randy Weber and encouraging Texans to come out and vote for Randy Weber,” Cruz said.
He spent the lunch hour discussing the national debt, repealing the Afordable Care Act, commonly referred to as “Obamacare” and restoring the nation.
“If we get back to the founding principles of our country, to free enterprise, to limited government, to fiscal responsibility, to the constitution, that’s what enables small business and entrepreneurs to flourish and create jobs,” he said.
Karson Riggs, 16, attended the rally. He still has years to go before he can vote, but he already volunteers for political campaigns, educating himself on the issues that will affect him.
“Candidates who are in office right now, are on the ballot right now, you may be voting to re-elect in two years or four years, so I think it’s still important to keep up with what’s going on in our government and be an informed citizen,” Riggs said.
KFDM reached out to Democratic candidate Nick Lampson. His campaign had the following to say:
“Nick Lampson has a long record of public service. Jefferson County voters know Nick Lampson as a reliable and independent voice for southeast Texas. So it should come as no surprise that the newspapers that have endorsed Ted Cruz did not endorse Randy Weber, they endorsed Nick Lampson: the Beaumont Enterprise, the Houston Chronicle, and the Galveston County Daily News. In fact, Mr. Weber has yet to receive a single newspaper endorsement.”
Last week, former president Bill Clinton traveled to Beaumont for a rally to support Lampson.
