Jefferson County Democrats celebrated as President Barack Obama was crowned victorious in the race to the White House.
Mr. Obama won just about every battleground state, putting him well above the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.
“We’re really happy, not just here, but all over the nation,” Gus Roy, a Democrat said.
He joined dozens of people at a Democratic watch party hosted by the Nick Lampson campaign. “
I think it’s wonderful, and I’m so glad that he’s getting another four years, to finish what he started,” said Cissie Owen.
The night, however, wasn't free from disappointment. Former Congressman Nick Lampson lost his race for the U.S. House of Representatives for District 14 to State Representative Randy Weber.
“I’ve just called Mr. Weber and conceded, congratulated him on a good race,” Lampson said while holding back the tears.
Lampson said he will enjoy taking a small break, but his work will continue in Jefferson County, starting with some advice.
“I want everyone in this nation to solidify around the people we've just elected all of them,” he said. “Whether it's Randy Weber or whether it's President Barack Obama, and let's make sure that four years from now, I can say about my grandchildren that they have a better opportunity to live a productive life than what they have right now."
