BAYTOWN, Texas/KHOU News -
Baytown police were searching for a gunman who killed a man and injured two others on Saturday night.
It happened just after 5 p.m. at the Fox Apartments in the 1000 block of north Main Street.
“Words can’t explain it, it was so terrifying,” witness Gary Roberts said. “It was really scary.”
Witnesses say the gunman got out of a car, approached a small crowd outside a home, and opened fire with a handgun.
Three men, all believed to be in their early twenties, were struck. Roberts was in a neighboring apartment and said he heard eight to ten shots. .
He said he put his 7-year old son on the floor and called 911. Residents said it marked the second murder at the complex this year.
In April, a man in his fifties was stabbed more than 70 times after police said a drug deal went bad. A suspect was arrested in the killing.
This time, they suspect retaliation from a beating Friday night. They said a man nearly clubbed another man to death with a baseball bat.
“I’m not sure if the individuals that were actually struck by gunfire are directly related to the assault,” said Lt. Eric Freed, Baytown Police Department.
“That is one thing we have to figure out.” Lt. Freed said the area is known for narcotics trafficking.
What he does not know for sure is whether the shooting victims, two of whom were residents, were somehow part of that.
One is now dead, another is in critical condition, and the third is in stable condition.
As for the shooter, police have identified him as 37-year-old Cameron Gold of Baytown.
They believe he may be driving a 2007 beige Saturn. Some residents said they saw him Friday night at the complex.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 281-427-TIPS.
