HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – From KHOU and www.khou.com - A sheriff’s office sergeant was sent to the hospital by Life Flight early Monday after he crashed into an SUV while responding to a reported stabbing, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
The driver of the SUV, a woman, was sent to the hospital by ambulance in unknown condition.
The crash occurred at the intersection of east Beltway 8 and Highway 90. Deputies said the sergeant struck an older white Chevrolet Suburban just after his light turned red. The sheriff’s office said the patrol car’s lights and siren were on at the time.
Officials identified the injured deputy as Sgt. Felix Dlouh, a 30-year-veteran of the force. He was said to be in critical but stable condition after undergoing a series of tests at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Deputies initially said there were three people in the struck Suburban, two men and one woman, but they later said only the woman was in the SUV.
The sheriff’s office said the reported stabbing may have been the result of a prank call.
A passing driver witnessed the accident and later spoke with the media about it.
“I was in a state of shock,” said the driver. “The lady ejected out of the vehicle. I thought she was dead. She was saying words. I just told her to stay there and lay calm.”
It was first reported that the SUV struck the deputy, but after an investigation, the sheriff’s office determined the patrol car struck the SUV.
Houston TranStar reported the crash occurred around 1:45 a.m. Monday, blocking three northbound frontage road lanes. The lanes remained closed for several hours heading into the morning rush hour commute.
An investigation is ongoing.
