HOUSTON - by Malini Basu / KHOU 11 News and www.khou.com staff - The sons of a Pearland couple killed in Thursday’s massive pileup on Interstate 10 are now speaking out about their loss.
Vincent Leggio, 64, and Debbie Leggio, 60, died when their vehicle was crushed between a big rig and a car. Their deaths were the only fatalities as more than 100 vehicles collided in early morning fog on Thanksgiving Day.
“We -- love them and we -- and it's terrible,” an emotional V.J. Leggio, Jr. told KHOU 11 News.
V.J., the couple's oldest son, said he worked with his dad at their family business, Vinco Electric in Pearland. They owned it for 30 years.
“My dad and I, we worked together,” said V.J. “We had a good relationship. We got to spend time together golfing and fishing, and I’m so thankful for that now.”
Richard Leggio, the family’s youngest son, just finished watching the Texans game when he got the call Thursday afternoon.
“They were going on a gambling trip,” Richard told KHOU 11 News. “…it was our first thanksgiving away from each other.”
The couple made it to I-10 near Beaumont when the fog was unbearable as the sun came up.
Witnesses said they couldn’t see a thing in front them as a chain reaction crash involving dozens of cars carried on. At least 50 people were sent to the hospital. The Leggios were in their white SUV when they were hit from behind.
“My parents are wonderful loving people -- all who knew them knew that,” said V.J. “They will be sorely missed -- sorely missed.”
