BEAUMONT - By Megan Dillard - This time of year, most kids are excited about getting presents for Christmas.
The lesson taught at one Beaumont martial arts school is that the season is also about giving.
The students at the Texas Punishment Crew martial arts school off Phelan in Beaumont are wrapping up tonight's class.
Instructor Jason Ebarb says physical lessons on the mat build strength, but the school also aims to teach kids the importance of character.
The kids are bringing canned goods to class to donate to the Southeast Texas Food Bank to help hungry families during the holidays.
"With the Southeast Texas Food Bank, they do an excellent job. So if we can help that out, especially around the holidays with a giving spirit and everything, it definitely shows the kids a physical example of how we can carry the things and the positive traits that we've created on the mat, off the mat."
13-year-old student Conner Eastman explains, "It's a good influence for kids to teach them to have better behavior in life, like school, and they train us good here. It feels good to be able to help people."
The martial arts school is collecting canned goods and pantry items through December 20.
