A woman is undergoing treatment following an early Thursday morning accident just west of Jasper. The single-vehicle crash was discovered at about 5:30 on Highway 63 West, in front of West Oaks Cemetery.
According to Trooper Kevin Brewster of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of the 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, 59-year-old Debra J. Legault, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, told him that she was eastbound on Highway 63 and swerved to avoid a deer.
Her truck left the south side of the highway, went through two fences, and rolled over several times before landing upright in front of the cemetery.
According to Brewster, the woman was trapped in her vehicle for several hours, and she honked her horn trying to get someone to find her. She was finally discovered by a Jasper firefighter at about 5:30.
Jasper firemen had to use the Jaws-of-Life to rescue Legault. She was then transported by Acadian EMS to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
Trooper Brewster said that based on the skid marks and other evidence at the scene, he is writing Legault citations for unsafe speed, as well as no insurance.
