HARRIS COUNTY - by KHOU 11 News and www.khou.com
Deputies said they were forced to open fire on a young man who pointed a rifle at them in his parents' backyard in northwest Harris County.
It happened in the 15100 block of Easton Park near West Road around 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the 22-year-old man first pulled the rifle on his parents during an argument inside their home. The parents called 911 for help, but when deputies arrived, the young man was gone.
Deputies searched the area, fearing the son was roaming the neighborhood with the gun. About two hours later, the young man was found hiding in his parents’ backyard.
When a deputy approached, the man pointed his rifle at him, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy fired one shot, striking the suspect. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officials said this wasn’t the first time the man’s family called 911 for help.
“There were some verbal altercations and physical altercations that happened before,” said Deputy Thomas Gilliland. “I think we’ve had previous calls. Nothing, I think, compared to what we’ve had tonight.”
As with any officer-involved shooting, the Harris County District Attorney, homicide investigators, and internal affairs are all investigating incident.
