The City of Ames is undergoing a makeover, all in the hopes of changing the reputation the city has built over the years – a speed trap.
Mayor John White entered office 20 years ago. Since then, he’s worked to change the perception of Ames as a speed trap. His first day in office, he disbanded the 21-officer police department.
“For 2000 people, I just thought that was way too many cops,” he said. “They were just… to be simpler, just a mess.”
Now, the city relies on the Liberty Sheriff’s Office for patrol.
In addition to disbanded the police department, Mayor White also upgraded the city’s water and sewage system.
“Any kind of storm that would lose power, our sewage department can keep running and with the generator on our water system, we can keep supplying water to all of our homes,” he said.
The mayor also has plans to erect a multi-purpose building that would house a volunteer fire department as well as the city’s community center.
White says it’s all part of serving the community.Mayor looks to change speed trap image
