JASPER COUNTY - by Mike Lout/KJAS and Rayburn Broadcasting Company
The Jasper County grand jury has charged a Jasper woman with Capital Murder in connection with the September 2012 death of her 18-month-old daughter.
The decision came on Tuesday after District Attorney Steve Hollis and his staff presented evidence obtained by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department following an investigation into the injuries the young girl received at the family’s home on Farm to Market Road 2799.
Investigators say the mother, 40-year-old Angel Bryan, hit or beat young Patience Bryan, causing injuries to her head that she eventually died from.
The child was first taken to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital, but was later transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston where she later died, despite the efforts of doctors to save her life.
Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said the mother told him that the girl fell. However, Newman said that doctors told he and others investigating the incident that the child suffered from a fractured skull, and the injuries were not consistent with falling.
Angel Bryan was arrested a few days after the death and later appeared before a judge, who denied bond. Since that time she's remained in the Jasper County Jail.
Under state law, Bryan could receive the maximum penalty of death by injection.
The grand jury also on Tuesday handed up indictments charging three Jasper residents with murder in connection with the August 2012 beating death of Ryan Cole Dockens of Brookeland.
