A family is mourning the loss of their son after he died in a vehicle crash that left his wife critically injured and his 4-year-old son wandering the wreckage.
Eric McCarthy died early Monday when the vehicle he was driving crashed at about 2 a.m. on Old Houston Road near Stevenson Drive, southeast of the City of Conroe.
McCarthy’s wife, Amber, and his 4-year-old son, Tanner, were thrown from the car during the accident. The woman was found unconscious near the wreckage, while the child escaped serious injury.
The accident occurred just two blocks from a relative’s home, where they were headed to visit Tanner’s grandparents.
“Just numbness. Trying to process what has happened,” David Ward, Eric McCarthy’s stepfather, said.
Ward and his wife had to visit the accident scene to see for themselves. The stepfather said that Tanner is a miracle survivor.
Not only was the child able to escape injury, but he was able to walk away.
“He had the wings of angels watching over him,” Linda Knight, a family friend, said. “That is the only explanation. God was watching over him.”
Ward said that Tanner really did not understand what had happened at the time of the accident.
“He was out here just wandering around in a ditch not really understanding what is going on and scared,” Ward said. “He was excited when he saw all the fire trucks.”
Tanner was taken in by a neighbor near the scene of the crash, while crews spent 15 minutes reviving his mother. His father pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
“He had no clue what happened,” Knight said. “Now, how to explain to a 4-year-old that his daddy is gone? I don’t know how to fathom that.”
Amber McCarthy remains in critical condition and suffered a broken neck, pelvis, hip and other injuries.
State troopers are investigating the crash. They said only one car was involved.
Evidence at the scene suggested the vehicle was traveling southbound on Old Houston Road when the driver hit the brakes. A lengthy skid mark was left on the pavement before the vehicle left the roadway.
