An Evadale grandmother and two of her grandsons have been charged with stealing numerous items from their neighbor, and then stashing several of the items under their house.
According to Sheriff Mitchel Newman, the investigation began on Thursday when the victim, Ricky Brown, reported hunting rifles, a television, tires, and several other items stolen from his home on County Road 881.
Sheriff Newman noted that it was an ongoing problem, with numerous items stolen from Brown, but investigators were never able to pinpoint a suspect.
That changed on Friday when, according to Newman, the investigation led deputies to a house next door, where they found the tires and rifles, along with other items, hidden underneath the residence.
Sheriff Newman said his deputies even found one of the suspects wearing a pair of red cowboy boots that was stolen from the victim.
According to Newman, deputies arrested 65-year-old Shirley Santos, along with her two grandsons, 21-year-old Brandon Santos, and 25-year-old Joseph Murphy.
All three later appeared before Precinct 6 Justice of the Peace Steve Conner, and were each charged with theft of property. Bond on Shirley Santos and Joseph Murphy was set at $3,500.00, while bond on Brandon Santos was set at $1,500.00.
The three were later released from the Jasper County Jail after making arrangements to post bond.
Newman said the investigation also led deputies to a residence in Orange County, where they had to wait for over 6 hours for an Orange County Justice of the Peace to issue a search warrant.
Once inside, Newman said deputies obtained information that led them to recover more of the items stolen from Ricky Brown.
