LU Football holds community kickoff

BEAUMONT, Texas – More than 100 Red and White clad fans packed Spindletop – Gladys City Thursday evening to help celebrate the anticipated start of the Mike Schultz era at Lamar University. Fans turned out to hear Schultz -- who is just the program’s second head coach since its rebirth – speak about the upcoming 2017 season.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature attempted to upstage Schultz at the beginning of the event as heavy rains hit the area as the program was slated to begin. LU’s fan base proved they were undaunted by the elements as they continued to turnout despite the downpour, and children took advantage of the opportunity to play in the rain.

After nearly a 20-minute delay, the fans were treated to a pre-game style pep talk from the Cardinals’ new head coach that had Schultz walking away from the mic at the end of his speech to a loud ovation. The weather may have cancelled the scheduled gusher re-enactment at the end of the program but it didn’t dampen the spirit of the Cardinals’ fans.

The Cardinals will officially open camp Sunday when players report to campus. The players will check-in, get their equipment, take pictures and then face the media before making their first preparations for the 2017 campaign.

The season is slated to get under way Saturday, Sept. 2 in Denton, Texas against North Texas. The Cardinals open the home portion of the schedule the following Saturday against Texas-Permian Basin (7 p.m.).
