LU Softball defeats Utah St. in tourney opener
AUSTIN, Texas – The Lamar Lady Cardinals pounded out a season-high 10 hits as they claimed a 5-2 win over Utah State in the opening game of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational on Friday.
“”It was nice to see our bats get going,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “We were aggressive and had some good swings.”
Lamar (4-4) got two hits apiece from Ashley McDowell, Candyce Carter and Beverly Corry. The Lady Cardinals jumped into a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a throwing error by starting pitcher Mandy Harmon to score three unearned runs. Casey Cromwell capped the outburst with a two-run single.
After Utah State (0-11) got a run in the top of the third, Lamar quickly responded in the bottom of the inning when Jenna Holland’s double off of reliever Noelle Johnson plated Shannon Sain, who had pinch run for Beverly Corry.
The Lady Cardinals boosted their lead to 5-1 in the fourth when McDowell’s single scored Julianne Viator. Utah State threatened in the top of the seventh as Rachael Hunsaker’s one-out double scored Kassandra Uchida, but Lamar starter Shannon Millman (3-1) quelled the uprising, ending the game when Carter made a gorgeous catch of Libby Pederson’s smash to center field.
Millman pitched her fourth complete game in as many starts, allowing six hits and walking four, while striking out six.
“Shannon was ahead in the count most of the day, and that’s something we worked on,” Bruder said. “We also played good defense behind her. That’s another thing we worked on at practice.”
Harmon (0-7) took the loss, allowing five hits and three unearned runs in two innings. Johnson allowed two runs and five hits over four innings of relief, striking out six.
Lamar continues play at the tourney when it meets sixth-ranked Texas at $;30 p.m. today. The Lady Cardinals face 24th-ranked Tulsa at 1 p.m. Saturday. The semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, with the consolation and championship games set for 10 a.m. and noon Sunday
