Lamar Football wraps up third week of spring practice

BEAUMONT – With the Crawfish Bowl just 10 days away, the Lamar University football team closed its third week of spring practice Saturday morning at Provost Umphrey Stadium with a 30-play scrimmage that saw highlights on both sides of the ball.

The LU defense set the tone early, holding the offense to a long field goal attempt on the first series. The big play came on third-and-eight as quarterback Caleb Berry looked for senior wide receiver Jordan Edwards across the middle. Senior defensive back Chad Allen delivered a vicious hit that separated Edwards from the ball.

Senior quarterback Ryan Mossakowski was under center for the next offensive possession and was intercepted by senior defensive back Nashon Davis on first down. Davis picked it off just inside of the 50-yard line and raced down the right sideline for a touchdown.

After a three-and-out by the LU offense on the next possession, Berry led the Lamar offense into the end zone on his next turn at the helm. Berry, who finished 7-of-9 for 80 yards, found sophomore receiver Reggie Begelton for 19 yards. The junior signal caller then hit Barry Ford for 12 yards and capped the drive with a 19-yard scoring strike to Michael Handy.

Mossakowski then guided the Cardinals on a pair of scoring drives. On first down from midfield, B.J. Oyefeso hauled in a 34-yard, one-handed grab against tight coverage. Sophomore running back Desmond Richards took over from there, scampering 16 yards for a touchdown.

The running game provided the final two scores for the Lamar offense on the day. Mossakowski found Kelechi Ejekam for 22 yards on first down as he finished 2-of-7 on the day for 56 yards. Senior Caleb Harmon, who is returning from injury, ripped off an 8-yard run and followed it with 13 more yards to set up a first-and-goal from the seven. Senior Payton Ploch, who is moving from wide receiver to running back, then took it up the middle for a 7-yard score.

Berry led the final drive of the day and hit Ford for eight yards on first down. Richards, who carried six times for 42 yards, picked up 13 yards on three straight rushes. Berry then found Begelton for a 20-yard gain to the nine-yard line. Ploch ran three straight times, eventually taking it over from the one to close the scrimmage.

Defensively, senior linebacker Jermaine Longino had several big stops as he looks to build on last year’s team-leading 107-tackle performance. Defensive back Tyrus McGlothen was strong in the secondary, as well.

“I’m really pleased with the way we’re progressing in the spring,” said LU head coach Ray Woodard. “We have come a long way since our first scrimmage two weeks ago on both sides of the ball and that doesn’t always happen.

“Today we looked really good defensively early on with a stop and then Nashon’s interception which doesn’t make the offense look great. But then, the offense got it going and the defense didn’t look as good. It was just a matter of strong execution on both sides of the ball.”

The Cardinals will hold 15 practices culminating in the annual spring game known as the Crawfish Bowl on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 7 p.m. Lamar will be back in action Monday evening at 7 p.m.

Prior to the Crawfish Bowl, in conjunction with the A.T.O. Alumni Association, Lamar Athletics will be hosting a crawfish cookout. Crawfish cookout teams are currently being encouraged to sign-up and register their teams to participate in the cookout by emailing Michael Wilkinson at michael.wilkinson@lamar.edu or calling 409-880-7677. Plates will be sold at the game to sample and judge by the LU softball team with all proceeds benefiting their program. The cookout will take place from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Dauphin Athletic Complex parking lot.

Lamar’s 12-game season begins on Aug. 31 when Oklahoma Panhandle State pays a visit to Provost Umphrey Stadium. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715 or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
